Work in progress - Master Bedroom

Patron Saint Bridge 30" x 48"

This is a piece of artwork just purchased for a client's home . The artist is Gretchen Gammell. I particularly
like her newest work which is a whimsical tribute to the "transitions and narratives of modern female life". She uses a muted palette and languid, girlish characters. It is going to hang over the bed in the Master Bedroom on a concrete wall. The draperies are going to be full length silvery gray taffeta silk which will compliment the concrete wall. The bedding will be all white with throw cushions in a bright pink Designers Guild fabric to pick out the color of the flowers in the dress in the artwork. I found really cool lamps for the bedside tables. The bases are covered in birch bark and the shades are chocolate taffeta and sit on a clear lucite base.

Chic White Bedrooms

Nothing is more chic or timeless than WHITE ON WHITE in a bedroom. I grew up in a white bedroom and I can still remember the quality of light that came through my white curtains as the morning sun was rising. Using white in a room can make it have surprising depth - I use several shades of white to bring out the architectural details in a room, or I layer the space with strong forms in different tones and textures of white and then use some strong contrasts to outline and bring the white into focus. Also every room no matter what colors are being used can benefit from a touch of black. Some of my favourite whites I use are are from Benjamin Moore - Cloud White, Simply White, Ballet White, Designer White. Not every white is snow white. Try using: ivory, cream, antique white, and palest beige, blue and yellow.

I like the way that Thomas Pheasant has treated this bedroom architecturally.
The wrap around tufted low headboard creates a unified feeling to a room that has angled walls.
Vincente Wolf is a master at juxtaposition.
His signature element in all of his rooms is a large over sized mirror, usually resting on the floor.

This is Nancy Corzine's very elegant bedroom.
The mirrored screen creates a lively play of light and images.

Super Luxe by Alberto Pinto.
I like the layering of the padded headboard on a padded wall.

Hotel Luxe Marrakesh

This is a master bedroom that I did for a bachelor in Vancouver's historic Gastown. There are recessed sliding glass doors on each side of the bedroom to close it off from the dining room and the ensuite bathroom.

I didn't want electrical outlets to be cut out of the glass tile backsplash so I had them mounted in the bottom of the upper cabinets.

Architectural Digest

I have recently been published in Architectural Digest magazine and have been getting quite a few inquiries about the chairs I used in this article. They are from Poltrona Frau designed by Paolo Rizzatto. They are an extremely modern design of the bergere chair: comfortable and welcoming, but with great visual simplicity. The seat and back are obtained from a single rigid shell which is covered with a new design of the capitonnee, where the buttons are replaced with special fastening rings of polished aluminum that create transparencies. The base is aluminum. The armchair can be reclined to find the ideal relaxing position. Upholstered in white Ferrari leather.

This a view of the master bedroom and ensuite bathroom in a home I recently designed. It was featured in Architectural Digest magazine December 2006. You can read the article here. I used a wonderful bronze sculpture on the bedside table which was sculpted by a dear friend and very talented Architect Colin Kwok. The title of the piece is Jeanne d'Arc and it is breathtakingly beautiful.
Trained as an architect but passionate as a bronze sculptor, Colin Kwok was trained at the Rhode Island School of Design. Read more about Colin at Intelligence Online

Vancouver Artist Glenn Payan

I recently completed a residence for clients shown above and hung a piece Glenn Payan's art.
"The subjects of many of Glenn’s paintings are colourful and, sometimes moody, whimsical landscapes: west coast and mountain villages, local Vancouver scenes and perched roadways winding along coastal waterways and between majestic mountains. His obsession with the Sea to Sky corridor, between Vancouver and Whistler has produced many stunning pieces."

In case you haven't heard Vancouver & Whistler are hosting the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The following pieces of Glenn's work are of the Sea to Sky Highway which links Vancouver to Whistler mountain. Above the Cheakamus II 2007 Oil on canvas 40" x 60"

Glenn's works are on display at the Ian Tan Gallery

Nothing is more chic than WHITE ON WHITE

Some white facts from the web:

Ultimate Light: White is purity, cleanliness, and innocence. Like black, white goes well with almost any color.

Culture of White: In most Western countries white is the color for brides. In the East, it's the color for mourning and funerals. Some cultures viewed white as the color of royalty or of deities. Angels are typically depicted as wearing white. In early Westerns the good guy wore white while the bad guy wore black.

Using White: In most cases white is seen as a neutral background color and other colors, even when used in smaller proportion, are the colors that convey the most meaning in a design. Use white to signify cleanliness or purity or softness. Some neutral beige, ivory, and creams carry the same attributes as white but are more subdued, less brilliant than plain white. Use lots of white for a summery look. Use small amounts of white to soften a wintery palette or suggest snow.

Using White with Other Colors: Used with light or pastel tones, white is soft and Spring-like and helps to make the pastel palette more lively. White can make dark or light reds, blues, and greens look brighter, more prominent.

White Words: These words are synonymous with white or represent various shades of the color white.
