High Line, New York, United States

The High Line, by James Corner Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro, is a new 1.5-mile long public park built on an abandoned elevated railroad stretching from the Meatpacking District to the Hudson Rail Yards in Manhattan. Inspired by the melancholic, unruly beauty of this postindustrial ruin, where nature has reclaimed a once vital piece of urban infrastructure, the new park interprets its inheritance.

Through a strategy of agri-tecture?part agriculture, part architecture?the High Line surface is digitized into discrete units of paving and planting which are assembled along the 1.5 miles into a variety of gradients from 100% paving to 100% soft, richly vegetated biotopes. The paving system consists of individual pre-cast concrete planks with open joints to encourage emergent growth like wild grass through cracks in the sidewalk. The long paving units have tapered ends that comb into planting beds creating a textured, ?pathless?

Seoul National University Museum, Korea, Republic of

The Seoul National University Museum is defined by its siting on the side of a small hill, close to the entrance of the university. The building?s form was conceived as a basic rectangular box, theoretically sliced diagonally by the incline of the hill. This form is then raised up on a small central core ? Both outside and inside, free-flowing circulation was key to the thinking behind the building. The central core is an atrium with a square-spiral staircase connecting the various program areas: exhibition, education, library, and operations.

The educational spaces ? the lecture hall and auditorium ? The library inhabits the structural core of the building. The exhibition space, being the primary function, inhabits the entire top floor. Elsewhere, materials vary, and include concrete flooring, plywood paneling, and translucent plastic paneling over fluorescent lighting. The museum?s fade is also translucent, revealing the structural steel truss work beneath.

VERTICAL SAFARI, Buenos Aires, Argentina

The key issue is how allow the Buenos Aires Vertical Zoo, becoming a real gateway to the natural world, being the display of live animals, encouraging visitors to take action benefitting wildlife and ecosystems. Usually visitors can drive in their own vehicles and observe the wildlife, rather than viewing animals in cages or small enclosures.

We propose to add an unexpected bonus… an observation wheel to create a dramatic and surprising city sightseeing safari! An astonishing new kind of building, issue of several trends emerging architectural and urban icons. It can be defined as a hybrid that merges the skyscraper, the safari zoo, and the Ferry’s Wheel into an ecological urban new beacon, creating a dynamic civic building attractive for a very wider public.

Located in the projection of the visual axe joining the Reserve area to the Obelisk, the Observation wheel is the nerve center of the whole complex Zoo. Arrived to the top of the circuit, visitors can make a pause and enjoy sightseeing options at the visitor’s facilities level.

Tram Stop in Alicante, Spain

TRAM STOP Sergio CardellPlaza, Alicante, SPAIN Light Alicante is a 400.000 inhabitants city of the southeast mediterranean spanish coast.  This line connects all the towns of the coast, ending in Denia, a northern city of the province, where ships departure to Ibiza. This stop, is the central stage of a new line of the tram, that links the centre of the city to the residential areas of San Juan beach. The construction of the Tram Stop was the opportunity to bring back a stolen space to the city: to turn a traffic circle into a public space.

Over the platforms, 2 empty boxes (36 m long, 3 m wide, 2,5 m high) create a floating void slightly over the travellers? heads. It matches the size of the train, creating an intermediate scale between buildings and urban elements. The holes reduce the weight as increase the resistance to normal tensions, and equally decrease wind pressures among the surfaces. Light and air pass through, smoothing the shadow and generating a soft breeze in summer months. At night the boxes are transformed into two giant lamps. Benchs are spread over the garden close to the vegetation and the paths, creating a public place overlaying the quiet of the seated people and the movement of the people walking.
